The
sadar Upazila for its tremendous beauty, amazing resources, and enthusiastic
liveliness of people get fabulous attraction to tourists and visitors.
Literally we can say it a very prosperous Upazila. Besides administration it is
important for pilgrimage of the holy graveyard of Hazrat Shah Mostofa (RA) and
some other saints. Immense influx of foreign currency makes it rich and
wealthy. River, lake, hill, vast plain land makes it’s natural complexion
extraordinary.
History
says that in the middle of 17th century Moulvi Kudratullah
established a small bazar near his house and local people named it as
Moulvibazar. This market was established at riverside of the present Poschim
Bazar (West Market), which gradually expanded over the time.
From
archeological source, it is learnt that this place has an ancient habitation as
Hindu religious book revealed Moulvibazar as holy place and river Manu as
divine tribute.
Muslim
religion and its philosophy started to spread in this place in 14th
century with the arrival of the greatest saint Shah Jajal (RA) and his 360
companions in Sylhet as a savior against the hostile ruler Raja Gaur Govinda.
Amongst other companions of Hazrat Shah Jalal (RA), Hazrat Syed Shah Mostafa
(RA) and few others spent their devoted life to spread Islam and its ideology
in Moulvibazar area. The village he lived in was named after him as Mostafapur.

The
sadar Upazila consists of 12 Union Parishads, one class 1 Pourashava and 431
villages. Balagonj and Rajnagar Upazila are situated in the north, Sreemongal
and part of Kamalganj Upazila in the south, part of Rajnagar and Kamalganj is
situated in east and Nabiganj Upazila is situated in the west. Two million people live here within
132 Sq miles of area. It is a tropical region, which is 50’ above of sea level.
Certain
ancient documentary evidence shows that Moulvibazar municipality was
established in 1918-1919. Late Jotindra Muhan Deb was the first elected
chairman of the Moulvibazar Municipality (For details please click on

Palace
of Hindu Raja Raj Chandra in Khalilpur union is famous for its architectural
heritage. Monumukh was once famous for the river port in the Sylhet division.
Kamalpur , Upper Kagabala, Amtoil, Kanakpur, Nazirabad unions are famous for
the bulk rice production. Ekatuna is one of the richest unions for its pounds and dollars coming from UK and USA.
The Eye Hospital and Monu barrage are situated in Chadnighat union.
Major
(Retd) Khalidur Rahman was first elected Chairman of this Upazila. Later on a
freedom fighter Mr. Abdul Mosobbir was elected as the Upazila Chairman. The
government in 1991 suspended the
Upazila administration, but the present government has already announced to
hold the upazila election soon.
